REPORT OF “WHO IS KNOCKING AT MY DOOR?” ERASMUS + PROJECT

7/14 DECEMBER 2014 GEEL STUDY VISIT

The second study visit of the Erasmus + Project “Who is knocking at my door?” was held in Geel, Belgium, from 7/14 December 2014 with the participation of the following schools:

  2. TURKYE Tuna Anatolian Vocational High School, Istanbul.
  3. SWEDEN Uddevalla Gymnasieskola Agneberg, Uddevalla.
  4. GERMANY Stadtteilschule Poppenbüttel, Hamburg.
  5. ITALY ISS “Charles Darwin”, Rome.
  6. FRANCE Lycée Jean Bouin, Saint Quentin.

During the study visit the guests were brought from the hostel “Vakantiehuis Akindo vzw” to school in cooperation with the bus company “Tempo Cars”.

Monday, December 8th

Presentation of the host country, video ‘This is Belgium’, presentation of the city of Geel

Official welcome by alderman Griet Verhesen and reception at City Hall.

Lunch at school

The lunch was prepared and served by 6OH, a group of students from our school who major in Logistics.

13:30

Students participated in a Flemish fair with traditional games, organised by 3 & 4 OR, a group of students who major in Office and Retail.

The teachers evaluated the the results of the essay and poster competition.

The subject of the poster and the essay was “ Acknowledge there is a difference: we’re not all the same”.

The results; the poster competition was won by the German team and the essay competition was won by the Italian team.

All posters from the competition are exhibited at the school’s refectory in the Erasmus+ corner. The essays and pictures of the posters will appear put on the project’s website.

Leisure time: the Belgian students accompanied their guests and explored the city centre of Geel together.

International buffet: each country brought typical national food or sweets for a gastronomical cultural exchange.

Tuesday, December 9th

Presentations: students presented their work on the topic: “Different models of national identity in the EU”.

Intreviews, short films done by the students on the following subject were shown: “Cultural diversity chanllenges in Europe today- Ethnic, racial, cultural and religious diversity”.

Lunch at school

The lunch was prepared and served by 6OH, a group of students from our school who major in Logistics.

Workshop games: the students played informative games ‘Similarities and differences’ and ‘Pictures of you and me’.

Teachers meeting: evaluation.

Guided visit of the Gasthuismuseum in different languages.

19:00

Evening activity, the students went on a hike through the Lommel woods with flashlights.

Teachers dinner at a local restaurant.

Bus ride to Bruges

Guided tour of the historical centre of Bruges in different languages.

Teachers and students got the chance to independently explore the city and all its cultural heratige.

Friday, December 12th

Folkdance workshop for students and teachers, led by one of our PE teachers Katrien Erpels. Several groups of Belgian students also participated in this activity.

Guest speaker on “Recognition of differences between countries, why young people become foreign to their own country or ethnic origin”- Jef Delarbre unfortunately fell ill and was forced to cancel his lecture. Sadly we were unable to replace him in such short notice. The lecture was replaced by some leisure time, that allowed for more intercultural exchange amongst the students.

The lunch was prepared and served by 6OH, a group of students from our school who major in Logistics.

International choir. All participants were taught a typical Belgian song: “Ik hou van u” by Noordkaap. An easy way to learn the Dutch language. Our colleague Martine Dams sang, played the guitar and directed the international choir. Anja Vleugels had translated the lyrics to the chorus in all of our international guests’ languages.

Final event: performance of dance and music by Yannick Aurélien, Caroline Schrauwen and Martine Dams.

Saturday, December 13th

Leisure time.

Suggestions: trip to Antwerp, Gent or Hasselt.

Most of our guests went to the city of Antwerp, they visited one of the museums. The others went to Brussels and re-explored the city.
